Harnett County North Carolina Information

Harnett county was formed in 1855 from Cumberland County. It was named after Cornelius Harnett (1723-1781), a member of the Continental Congress and signer of the Articles of Confederation. The County seat of Harnett County is Lillington, but the largest city is Dunn. The county is divided into the following townships: Anderson Creek, Averasboro, Barbecue, Black River, Buckhorn, Duke, Grove, Hectors Creek, Johnsonville, Lillington, Neills Creek, Stewarts Creek, and Upper Little River.

The western and southern part of Harnett County has historically been very rural, with the major occupation being farming. As the city and region has grown in population, this part of Harnett County has become a bedroom community to Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base, and Raleigh. There are no major cities in this area but there are many subdivisions. The retail shopping scene is beginning to expand into Western and Southern Harnett County as well.

Carolina residents refer to this area as the Sandhills. The Sandhills of North Carolina is a strip of ancient beach dunes which divides the Piedmont from the coastal plain. The Sandhills are evidence of a former coastline when the ocean level was higher, or the land lower. Harnett County has some of the same gentle hills made famous by golf courses such as Pinehurst in neighboring Moore County. This part of Harnett County has several golf communities, such as Carolina Lakes, Anderson Creek, and Carolina Seasons.

Harnett County is home to a wonderful state park called Raven Rock State Park. The park is located on the "fall line", where the Cape Fear River literally falls and produces the best rapids in the eastern piedmont. It is at this geological point, the hilly landscape and rocky hills of the piedmont give way to the flat terrain and softer rocks of the coastal plain. These cliffs were named Raven Rock after the birds nesting in the crevices.
